speak of the body needs the same thing we need. love. love. >> it's a privilege to be able-bodied enough to exercise. it's a privilege to be able to fit into gym machines. >> what do people not comprehend? i do not want to lose weight. >> you chose super fat as a fourth category to represent and include the very fattest in our

community. >> super! >> fat! >> super! >> fat! >> laura: the body positivity movement glamorizing obesity, some say, is feeling threatened, as americans are moving away from embracing the fat to embracing losing it with popular weight-loss drugs. body acceptance coach christina bruce joins me now. christina, it's great to have you on. every year in the u.s. -- and i know you know this -- obesity is cited as the leading cause of death for nearly 400,000 americans. so the cdc says people who have obesity compared to people with a healthy weight are at increased risk of many serious diseases. health conditions, obviously diabetes, strokes, heart attacks, et cetera. so why should this be something we are embracing and not discouraging? >> i think what's really

interesting about the research around that is it shows that there is a correlation between increased body size and these health conditions. but what it doesn't show is causation. if we actually just focus on improving health behaviors and not actually worry about body size, you are going to be able to see an increased improvement in some health without all the additional stress and worry and self shame and loathing that comes along with trying to be on a diet and losing weight all the time, and actually just focusing on what is it that make somebody feel good and healthy in their bodies, which i really think is what most people want. >> laura: i don't really understand that. i have to confess, i'm trying to follow that. but i get the shaming thing. i don't like that. i think you are right. people are trying their best. i don't have any problem with that. and some people really struggle with all sorts of compulsions,

or to eat, to gamble, to do whatever. but it is a proven fact that, if you are 100 pounds overweight, your joints are under enormous stress per square inch. everything in your body is under enormous stress. you would not dispute that, correct? >> what i would say is that, if somebody has a lot of weight on their body, it could for sure impact their joints and stress, but that can also happen. people have joint problems, too, if they are thin. so focus on what is actually going to improve people's joints. if you can imagine, if you have a pin on your skin and you press into that, it's going to cause a lot of problems and it's going to hurt. but if you just remove the pin, that it's not going to be a problem. so if you actually focus on what are the exercises, what are the things you can do to help improve joints, improve everything around the structure of the body that you would prescribe to somebody who is

having the same issues in a thin body, you're going to see an improvement and you don't actually have to focus particularly on the body size. so this isn't about not focusing on your health and not caring about your health. >> laura: i get that. are you someone who is in favor of all the drugs? we don't have to name them. the two major drugs that are being taken to lose weight. are you against those, for those? real quick. >> i understand why people do it, but i would say this. if somebody lived on a deserted island and they never saw another human person, would they feel the need to take ozempic? because what i find with the clients i work with, the thing they fear the most is the judgment and criticism from other people. >> laura: i get that, but if they are on a deserted island, they're probably not eating a lot of processed food and a lot of junk food, either. so they're probably not going to worry about any of that. great to see you. jesse's next. >> jesse: welcome to "jesse w p
